The village of Alozaina lies approximately 10 kilometres from the village of
Yunquera and 43 kilometres from Marbella. It sits in the middle of the Serriana
de Ronda mountains and the Guadalhorce Valley. It is a peaceful Spanish village
with the rustic whitewashed houses and cobbled streets. The village won the
title of the prettiest town in Spain in 1976. It has a rich history, as do many
of the small villages that surround Alozaina. The Moors fortified the area and
one of these was named “Alocaina”, from which the village name derives.
Main Tourist Attractions
Of the attractions located in Alozaina, the Santa Ana church is one of the most
spectacular. It is shaped in a distinct Latin cross shape and has wooden beans
in the ceiling. It dates back to the 18th century although it is thought to have
been built on a previous church. The Hermitage centre in Alozaina is built out
of rock and visitors can enjoy a Moorish cemetery with ancient stone tombs.
Alozaina also has its own castle which was rebuilt in the 1950’s. A few of the
original Moor details remain, including the tower. The castle offers stunning
views of the surrounding area. As with many other villages across Spain,
Alozaina has a festival in September, Las Fiestas en Honor del Dulce Nombre de
Maria. Many locals and residents enjoy this fiesta with a lot of music and the
free tasting of locally grown olives. The village of Coin, which is
approximately 20 kilometres away, has some of the prettiest and important
churches in Spain. Walkers and hikers will love the opportunity to walk through
the nearby pine forest of Cuesta de Pinto Alto or tackling the slopes of the
Sierra Prieta.
Shopping Opportunities
Alozaina has small family-run businesses which offer holiday and everyday items
for visitors. You will find a range of local arts & crafts as well as clothing,
jewellery and souvenirs. A short journey to Coin will present the shopaholics
with a chance to spend money in the La Trocha shopping centre on the outskirts
of the village. This is a shopper’s paradise offering goods such as perfume,
shoes, bags, leather goods, electrical items and toys.
Eating out and Nightlife
Alozaina has several bars and restaurants for visitors to enjoy. Local
specialities such as fried garlic with eggs and roasted pepper salads, as well
as the usual Spanish fare, are widely available. Some of the establishments
cater for those who prefer international cuisine. A varied and refreshing range
of beers and wines are available.
As there are no discos and nightclubs in Alozaina, those who crave dancing and
lights can take the 45 minute journey to Marbella.
