El Burgo is a town located approximately 67 kilometres from
Malaga which sits in
between the towns of
Ronda and
Coin. El Burgo is perched on mountainous terrain
and is located close to the Sierra de las Nieves. Some visitors may be pleased
to learn that the graffiti that can be seen in the town square during March and
April is a tradition that goes back centuries. Young men who are called up for
National Service write their name on the pavements the night before they leave.
Major Tourist Attractions
El Burgo is a haven for those who love nature and outdoor pursuits. You can
spend hours walking and climbing the vast landscapes that surround the town. You
may spot some rare mountain animals such as foxes, otters, eagles and storks.
There are also plenty of pine forest areas to walk through which are home to the
rare Pinsapo pine tree. Many visitors purely enjoy wandering round the steep and
narrow street, resting halfway up in a leather chair that has been kindly
provided by the locals! There are several architecturally beautiful buildings
including the town hall and several churches. The nearby town of Ronda offers
the chance to cross a very deep ravine and visit a neo-classically designed
bullring. Coin has several old churches that are of particular architectural
importance.
Shopping Opportunities
The town of El Burgo has a limited number of shops. You will be able to buy a
handful of gifts and souvenirs and the everyday items that you need. Coin has a
wonderful shopping centre called La Trocha. Here you can by a variety of items
including shoes, bags, clothing, pottery, ceramics, ornate linen, local
jewellery and perfume. Ronda has a pedestrianised shopping precinct with many
shops but no large commercial centres. Serious shopaholics could take the drive
to Malaga to indulge in the El Cortes Ingles department store or the Marques de
Larios shopping area.
Eating Out and Nightlife
There are many small cafés, restaurants and bars spread throughout the streets
of El Burgo. They will cater for all culinary tastes with menus reflecting both
traditional Spanish dishes and international cuisine. Local beers and wines are
available to wash down your tapas or paella.
The evenings in El Burgo are very calm and many people spend them chatting with
the locals and sharing a bottle of wine. Malaga is the nearest place if you
really have to let your hair down of an evening. It is a vibrant city with many
nightclubs, discos, karaoke bars and cabaret venues.
